5,000 pro-life signatures on abortion

Pro-life group wants to rectify "serious flaws" in current legislation

More than 5,000 people have signed a global pro-life online petition calling for heightened restriction to Manx abortion law.

Humanity and Equality into Abortion Reform (HEAR) only launched the digital document on Monday (October 10) on international platform Citizen Go - so it's likely a portion of those signatures aren't locally sourced.

The group wants to eradicate what it calls 'serious flaws' in the Termination of Pregnancy (Medical Defences) Act 1995 - which could be remedied by what it calls 'more equal and humane reform'.

Among the changes listed, HEAR wants Tynwald to tighten up the rules surrounding termination based on disability and improve the support and provision of psychiatric consultancy here.

HEAR was launched in direct response to the Campaign for Abortion Law Modernisation (CALM) - a pro-choice organisation formed to update legislation on the Island.

CALM aims to free women from what it describes as 'unacceptably restrictive and discriminatory' law here - which it suggests should be amended in line with the UK provision.
