Everyone 'welcome to bring in takeaway drinks' from 'surrounding café friends'
A bookseller in Strand Street has confirmed its café is to close at the end of business tomorrow (26 April).
Waterstones says it has made the decision 'after much consideration' and with awareness of 'the many fantastic eateries nearby'.
In a post on social media, the company confirmed all café staff will assume other roles within the shop.
It says more bookcases will be installed in the coming months to expand its retail offering.
Waterstones' statement in full: "Over the years, our café has become something of a welcome coffee haven for the local community and we are aware how beloved this destination can be.
"However, after much consideration (and aware of the many fantastic eateries nearby), we have determined that our bookshop would instead better benefit from a much deeper range of books, allowing Douglas to enjoy the better bookshop experience it deserves.
"To this end, we must announce the closing of our Waterstones café, effective from Saturday 26 April; happily, every member of our former café team will assume other roles in our bookshop."
It goes on: "Although our café may be disappearing, we hope you will enjoy your expanded Waterstones, which we will develop over the coming months.
"Whilst we work on installing new bookcases and tables, please do feel free to use the remaining café seating, and everyone is welcome to bring in takeaway drinks from any of our surrounding café friends whilst browsing our books and gifts.
"We thank our customers for the valued support they have given our café, and we look forward now to the next chapter in our bookshop's story."
