VAT change - reminder to businesses

VAT registered traders in the Isle of Man are being reminded the standard rate reverts to 17.5 per cent from January 1.

Economic conditions in the United Kingdom led to a temporary reduction to 15 per cent, from December 1 last year.

The Manx Treasury says special arrangements have been put in place to help businesses which will be trading through New Year's Eve into New Year's Day, but for most people the standard tax rate will be effective again from midnight on December 31.

The Treasury says it has issued the reminder to make sure businesses have time to organise their affairs and cope with the change.

Treasury Minister Allan Bell says his department will be keeping a close eye on UK Chancellor Alistair Darling's pre-budget statement on December 9, in case there are any further changes to VAT.
