Rise in number out of work

Unemployment rose slightly in June.

Official Treasury figures show a rise of 28 over the past month with 177 people signing on and 149 signing off the register during the month.

It means the Island’s current unemployment rate stands at 2.1 per cent.

Of the 918 unemployed, 622 are men and 296 women.

Statistics show a skills gap problem remains.

Only 12 people with health qualifications were looking for jobs in June, despite there being 40 healthcare vacancies.

In contrast, there were 21 vacancies in the ‘other admin/clerical’ category yet 61 people from that background were out of work.
