'World first' from Manx Telecom at NEC
An Island telecoms firm will debut a 'world first' new product at the Emergency Services Show in Birmingham this week.
Manx Telecom is showing off its First Responder Auxiliary Network (FRAN) satellite system at the event, which is being held at the NEC Arena.
It's been developed in partnership with US tech firm Globalstar.
MT claims FRAN is more resilient than the current system in place for emergency communications on the Island, adding the severe storms in December 2015 highlighted a number of problems.
In the event of a mobile signal failure, under the FRAN system, the user's call is automatically handed over to a stronger mobile network in range.
It means distress calls can be made in even the most remote locations.
