Lost VAT revenue: could more have been done?


During the emergency debate in Tynwald today (Tuesday) on the new VAT revenue sharing arrangement with the United Kingdom, many members praised the work of Treasury staff in retaining an important relationship with the UK.

But could more have been done to prevent the further, significant reduction in government revenue?

That's a question Beth Espey explored with Allan Bell, a former Treasury minister, and the current minister for economic development.

She began by putting it to him that the Isle of Man was presented with a 'done deal' regarding the ending of the Reciprocal Health Agreeement, and that decision was over-turned:
