Cavendish 'shocked' at difficulty of 2024 Tour de France route

Programme for next year's event was unveiled this week

Mark Cavendish says he's 'actually in a bit of shock' over the difficulty of next year's Tour de France route.

Speaking to media outlets following the route presentation in Paris on Wednesday, the 'Manx Missile' says once again there will be sprint opportunities 'but you've got to get to them, that's the problem you know'.

Cavendish - who delayed plans to retire and signed a contract extension into 2024 with Astana Qazaqstan this month - remains the joint all-time Tour stage winner on 34 victories with cycling great, Eddie Merckx.

His 2023 tour campaign came to a premature end after a crash on stage eight ruled him out of the remainder of the event.

The 2024 Tour de France will take place from 29 June to 24 July, starting in Florence, Italy - there's a significant change this year for the final stage of the event next year which will involve a time trial in Nice, France.
