Union Mills man admits gross indecency offences after previous denial

58-year-old changes pleas and will be sentenced in September

A Union Mills man will be sentenced in September after admitting committing a number of sexual offences against children.

Dennis George Wakefield, of Snugborough Avenue, had previously denied 12 allegations and was due to stand trial in August.

However he was rearraigned at Douglas Courthouse where he changed his pleas from not guilty to guilty.

The 58-year-old admitted four counts of gross indecency with a child under the age of 16.

Two of these dated between 15 January 2020 and 16 January 2022 – the other two dated between 6 April 2016 and 7 April 2020; all took place at his home.

He also admitted two charges of indecent assault and six of making indecent photographs of children between 16 August 2010 and July 2022.

The court was told these relate to more than 570 still pictures and two moving images.

Trial dates have now been vacated and a social enquiry report has been requested before he’s sentenced on 8 September.

Bail was granted until that date with the prosecutor telling the court: "I suspect he may need some time to get his affairs in order."
