Talks between union and Steam Packet expected to resume

It's hoped the discussions, held in Douglas, will bring an end to a long running dispute

Talks between the maritime trade union Nautilus and Steam Packet Company are expected to resume today, facilitated by the Manx Industrial Relations Service.

It follows a lengthy dispute which began escalating towards the middle of last year.

But it remains unresolved with discussions previously being described as reaching an 'impasse'.

Three days before Christmas, the Steam Packet Company issued notices of dismissal to workers who had not yet signed the contracts agreeing to new terms and conditions.

Those contracts would sign them up to adopt a live on-board model with officers given the choice of one week on, one week off; alternatively two weeks on, two weeks off.

Many of the Isle of Man's political figures spoke out against the move and called for Treasury - the SPC's owner - to intervene.

These discussions will be the first time Nautilus and the ferry operator have returned to the negotiating table since industrial action was carried out from 27 December until 5 January.

Action short of strike meant officers only worked to their contracted duties.

The action scuppered the Manxman's sailing schedule as a result, with a modified timetable being brought forward which saw only one sailing per day as opposed to two return trips.

The issue is also set to feature during question's at this month's sitting of Tynwald, which gets underway from 10am tomorrow. (16 January)
