Suspended sentence for man caught with almost 1 kilo of cannabis

53-year-old tells court he was holding it for someone else

A Douglas man has been handed a suspended sentence after being caught with almost £20,000 of cannabis.

Ivan Muzik was arrested by police after they turned up at his home, on Marathon Drive, for an unrelated matter on 17 January 2021.

The 53-year-old became ‘standoffish and aggressive’ when challenged about the smell of cannabis so officers began searching the property.

They found 988.5 grams of cannabis bush with a street value of £19,770.

Muzik later admitted possessing the Class B drug with intent to supply – in his basis of plea he said he was storing the cannabis for someone else who he refused to name.

He told the court in return for keeping the drug at his home he was given a small amount for his personal use.

Handing Muzik a 10-month custodial sentence, which is suspended for 18 months, Deemster Cook told him: “You need to be very wary of getting involved in this enterprise again.”

Describing his previous record as being ‘littered’ with convictions for drug offences he also imposed an 18-month Suspended Sentence Supervision Order adding: “I am taking a fairly lenient view here.”
