Students suffering financial hardship prompts 'clothes exchange' fundraiser

Concerns students unable to afford clothing to keep them 'warm and dry'

Students at University College Isle of Man suffering from financial hardship has prompted a fundraiser for the Student Emergency Fund.

Clothing from staff and students among others was donated to the ‘clothes exchange’ which supports students who may be experiencing financial pressures and are unable to afford ‘comfortable and appropriate’ clothing.

The items which included trainers, hoodies, jeans, trousers, dresses and T-shirts were sold for £1 each.

More than £900 was raised for the fund, which hopes to enable students to continue their studies.

UCM’s student council raised concerns about the current economic climate which made it difficult for some students to buy clothes which kept them ‘warm and dry’ throughout the winter.

Health and Wellbeing Coordinator Hannah May helped set up the exchange says “Not only are we able to provide affordable clothing for students who might be struggling, but we’re also encouraging students to think more sustainable whilst raising money.”
