Speed limits on Ben-my-Chree only apply for 12 miles

Waivers have been issued for rest of journey

Power limitations imposed on the Ben-my-Chree would only impact 12 miles of her journey between the Island and England.

The information has been released in response to a Tynwald question from a Douglas Central MHK.

Chris Thomas wanted to know what the estimated journey durations would be to Heysham and Liverpool 'between November and March in the range of sea and weather conditions expected given the power limitation imposed by the vessel’s International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate'.

The response reveals that waivers have been issued by the Isle of Man Ship Registry and UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency to allow the Steam Packet to operate without the power limitation within their respective waters.

IOMSR allowed this for manoeuvring in port and the UKMCA allowed it for manoeuvring and passage.

This means the only time the limitation would be applied would be for around 12 miles of the journey - to depart or arrive in Manx waters.

The remaining 44 miles would have been at full power and speed.

Treasury Minister Alex Allinson's response states that this translates 'as an estimate to 12 miles at 15 knots plus 44 miles at 18 knots, plus manoeuvring at either port to 3 hours and 50 minutes'.

But Chris Thomas wants to know why the vessel hasn't been sailing:
