Sentence set for property owner who flouted fire regs

55-year-old hadn't maintained emergency lighting or fire alarm system

A Ramsey woman will be sentenced next month after contravening fire regulations in a property she had let to a tenant.

Deborah Anne Perry, of Waterloo Road, admitted six offences during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The 55-year-old’s property, on Waverley Terrace, was inspected by the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture and the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service on 24 October.

It followed concerns raised by the only resident who lived there in a ground floor flat.

Inspectors found the emergency lighting and fire alarm system had not been maintained, a ceiling was compromised, there were issues with fire doors and no fire blanket in the kitchen.

There were also no instructions, or signage, to highlight what to do in an emergency.

The court was told Perry had written to the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service in 2022 to say the property was a single dwelling but the inspection had revealed it was not.

Bail was granted until she is sentenced on 1 August.
