Sentence date set for man who punched woman in face

31-year-old became verbally and physically abuse after drinking

A Douglas man will be sentenced next month after admitting punching a woman in the face.

Diogo Miguel Monteiro Ramos, of Cushag Road, assaulted her at his home on 27 August last year.

The 31-year-old had been due to stand trial but changed his plea to guilty during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The court heard he’d become verbally abusive towards the woman when he’d arrived home in the early hours; he’d been drinking and began swearing at her and damaging their possessions.

He then grabbed her and threw her on the sofa – Ramos then followed her to the bedroom and threw her on the bed before punching her in the face causing injury.

In his basis of plea Ramos said he was upset about personal issues at the time and apologised.

A social enquiry report has been requested before he is sentenced on 31 August; bail was granted until that date.

The prosecution offered no evidence on separate charges of committing a domestic abuse offence, and damaging property, and these were withdrawn.
