Juan McGuinness says the home is an important part of the community

A Ramsey Commissioner says the closure of Cummal Mooar could put a further 'strain' on social housing in the town.

Juan McGuinness says it's a 'really disappointing' decision for the elderly community in Ramsey.

He says the resolution by Manx Care to encourage residents to stay at home longer, could lead to longer wait lists as people want to move back and also require more money to modify homes to suit their needs.

Mr McGuinness says the care home is an 'important' part of the community in Ramsey.

He's been talking to Local Democracy Reporter Emma Draper:

Ramsey Commissioners said in a statement: “Ramsey Town Commissioners were disappointed not to have been made aware of the Manx Care decision to close Cummal Mooar and not rebuild a new facility on Waterloo Road prior to the announcement yesterday.

"This is disappointing for Ramsey, as the new care home on Waterloo Road on the old Cooil Ny Marrey site was eagerly anticipated and only received planning approval 9 months ago.

"Decisions need to be taken, and taken quickly to ensure that both the Cooil Ny Marrey and Cummal Mooar sites are not just left with no future plans to deteriorate and become a blot on the landscape.”

Manx Care has declined to be interviewed.

You can hear the full interview with Health Minister Lawrie Hooper about Cummal Mooar here.
