Probation for man who threatened to 'slit throats' of government workers

38-year-old threatened terrorist attack after employment dispute

A Douglas man has been ordered to work with the probation service after threatening to carry out a terrorist attack on the Isle of Man.

John Anthony Williams threatened to ‘slit throats’ at the Office of Human Resources following an employment dispute.

The 38-year-old, of Cullyn Avenue, admitted sending offensive, indecent or menacing messages on 30 June and was sentenced at Douglas Courthouse.

The court was told Williams was in contact with the Manx Industrial Relations Service in relation to a grievance with Manx Care.

He advised them: "They have shown their true colours – now I will show mine," adding: "It's going to be a very explosive month for Manx Care. Let's hope they have enough beds for my next move."

In follow-up correspondence Williams threatened: "The Isle of Man is going to see a big terrorist attack."

As a result of Williams’ threats the Office of Human Resources was 'locked down' to ensure the safety of employees and he was arrested.

During sentencing Williams’ advocate said her client had been struggling with his health, and financially, adding: “Things went wrong – he wasn’t entirely compos mentis in his mind.”

Imposing a 12-month probation order Magistrates told Williams the offence was serious adding: “There is no way we can gloss over that in any way, shape or form.

“We wish you well but be under no illusion if you’re back in court you won’t be treated this way on a second occasion.”
