Peel man who punched child to be sentenced in August

31-year-old also kicked family's puppy 'in frustration'

A Peel man will be sentenced in August after punching an 11-year-old child after a drunken row with her mother.

Ryan Lee Shepherd, of Kerroo Coar, also smashed a phone and kicked the family’s puppy ‘in frustration’ during the argument on 2 June.

At Douglas Courthouse the 31-year-old admitted common assault and destroying property.

The court heard Shepherd had started arguing with his partner at around 10.20pm, after drinking throughout the day, saying that he was hungry; he then became verbally abusive towards the young girl.

Shepherd made threats to punch her and proceeded to throw a kitchen chair which struck her on the arm; when her mother intervened, he threw her phone across the room damaging it beyond it repair.

He then shouted at the child and punched her with his fist on her upper left arm; the mother and daughter left the property and sought help from a neighbour before the police arrived.

A social enquiry report has been requested before Shepherd is sentenced on 1 August; he’s been bailed to an address on Marine Parade in Peel until that date.
