Motorists urged to watch out for hedgehogs

Rise in deaths prompts appeal

An alarming rise in the number of Hedgehog deaths on the Island's roads this summer has prompted an appeal to motorists from the Isle of Man Hedgehog Society.

Founder, Sandy Huyton, says the animals are nocturnal and spend the hours of darkness out and about looking for food. That's when the majority are killed as they cross roads.

Whereas some incidents are unavoidable Sandy believes that through greater awareness drivers can reduce the heavy toll on the local hedgehog population:
