Man who launched 'terrifying' assault on former partner spared jail

56-year-old punished for 'nasty incident'

A Douglas man who launched a ‘terrifying’ assault on his former partner has narrowly avoided being sent to prison.

Michael James Holden, of Fairways Drive, caused ‘significant bruising’ to the woman’s body during the incident in the early hours of 8 August last year.

At Douglas Courthouse he was handed a 16-week custodial sentence, which has been suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to domestic abuse.

The 56-year-old pushed the woman to the floor, by grabbing her shoulders, and kicked and punched her in the back during an argument.

He then attempted to remove her, and her possessions, from his property damaging her iPhone in the process.

During sentencing Holden’s advocate told the court it had been a ‘fairly short-term relationship’ adding: “Mr Holden was shocked by his behaviour following the incident and was deeply ashamed.”

“He was a man of good character which he has now sadly lost,” she added.

Ordering Holden to pay prosecution costs of £1300, and compensation of £1200, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told him he’d sought to ‘lay the blame’ on the complainant.

“It’s clear alcohol, very much, lay at the heart of the offending,” she added: “It is a very nasty incident indeed.”

A Domestic Abuse Protection Order will also be in place for six months.
