Longest serving magistrate retires after 29 years

Carol Maddrell thanked those she's worked alongside in the role

The Island’s longest serving magistrate has retired after almost 30 years of service.

Carol Maddrell sat on the bench for the final time this morning.

Tributes were paid to Mrs Maddrell’s service ahead of today’s magistrates proceedings, with magistrates past and present gathering in the courtroom.

Advocates, the clerk to the magistrates and those who served with her on the bench praised her work over the last 29 years.

Mrs Maddrell was described as a calm, considered lady in her deliberations, as well as a role model and a mentor.

Advocates said they were very grateful for her work as a magistrate, stating she always dealt with matters with integrity and without rushing to a decision.

Addressing the court, Mrs Maddrell said she had never imagined herself chairing the magistrates when she first became a magistrate, let alone being the oldest member.

She added that she had met and worked with some incredibly passionate people in her 29 years in the role, thanking all magistrates past and present that she’s worked alongside.
