Guilty pleas from taxi driver who fraudulently claimed £7k in benefits

30-year-old will be sentenced in March

A Ballasalla woman will be sentenced next month after fraudulently claiming more than £7,000 in benefits she wasn’t entitled to.

Treasury started an investigation into Abbey Cara Louise Gilman in September last year after receiving an anonymous tip off.

At Douglas Courthouse the 30-year-old pleaded guilty to four counts of making false representations to obtain benefits between January and September 2023.

The court heard Gilman had made claims for Jobseekers Allowance and Income Support in the eight-month period but had failed to declare her true income or her correct address.

Her bank statements were analysed which showed she was receiving money for work she was doing as a taxi driver and sports coach.

Utility bills from the Department of Infrastructure property she was supposed to be living at, in Clagh Vane, were also analysed; they showed very little energy usage from January onwards.

A social enquiry report has been requested before Gilman is sentenced on 26 March; she’s been bailed until that date.
