Gritters will be out once rain stops

Overnight temperatures to drop below zero

The Department of Infrastructure says its gritters won't be out on the roads tonight until after 9pm; when its expected the rain will stop.

Temperatures are expected to fall below zero after that and overnight leading to icy conditions on the Island's roads.

An Amber Weather Warning is in place from 9pm tonight until 3pm tomorrow (17 January).

The DoI says the roads won't be gritted until the rain has stopped as otherwise the salt will simply dissolve in the rain and run off.

Its duty officer will monitor the weather and adjust the start time of gritting until after the rain has stopped and run off reduced.

The roads to be gritted include the Beinn Y Phott and Tholt Y Will Roads, Creg Ny Baa Back Road, the Sloc, Roundtable and Shoulder Road and the Braddan Bridge diversion route.

It says it will also grit roads in Douglas and Onchan that are on bus routes.

The Department adds that it's had 'a number of requests over the past couple of days to pre-salt individual estate and residential roads'.

It says: "The Department deliberately focuses its available resources on the principal roads that are most heavily trafficked and that link centres of population. This is a time consuming task and there are simply not the resources to salt all roads in a few hours."

"There is also a network of about 1100 salt bins around the Island. The salt at these locations is available for use by the public to help alleviate issues in the immediate vicinity of a particular bin."

The map of salt bin locations can be found HERE (Psst - you have to click the salt bin icon and zoom into the map...)
