Douglas lifeboat called out on Wednesday
Two men were rescued by Douglas lifeboat yesterday after their 15 metre fishing vessel got into difficulty off Laxey.
The boat was taking in water and had lost power and communication.
Another fishing vessel in the area had attempted to take the stricken boat in tow before the arrival of the Douglas lifeboat, Joy and Charles Beeby.
Efforts to save the vessel failed and it sank about four miles off Laxey.
The drama unfolded yesterday afternoon at around 1.30pm. A nearby fishing boat tried to tow the stricken vessel, but had to give up when the tow line was dropped.
On arrival Douglas Lifeboat deployed a salvage pump and transferred one of its crew members to the sinking vessel to assist the skipper. At the same time the other crewman was taken onboard the Lifeboat.
After about 10 to 15 minutes into the tow the skipper of the fishing vessel requested to be taken off as the situation was deteriorating.
All efforts to salvage the vessel failed and it sank at 6.47pm four miles off Laxey.
Debris including ropes, baskets and a life raft were collected from the scene by the Lifeboat crew.
