Findings of Covid review to be published today

Outcome of Kate Brunner KC's investigations expected later

The findings of a review into government's handling of the Covid pandemic will be published today.

Kate Brunner KC has been looking into the Island's response to the outbreak.

Tynwald considered a full public enquiry in November 2021, but instead backed a suggestion from Chief Minister Alfred Cannan for an independent review instead.

In a statement announcing Ms Brunner's appointment as chair, she said the purpose of the review was not to apportion blame, but to identify good practice, lessons learned and to make recommendations for change, if any if required.

She's since heard from hundreds of individuals, including government ministers, civil servants and those who lost loved ones during the pandemic.

Ms Brunner had expected to have all evidence from government by January 2023, but in July stated a significant amount of material remained outstanding, before confirming evidence gathering was completed in October 2023.

The chair has the option to recommend a public enquiry - in July last year she said she felt the review would be sufficient, but that an enquiry remains under active consideration.

The review covers the period from the start of the pandemic through to April 2022, and was expected to cost around £1.5m.
