Driving ban for man who didn't comply with drink drive rules

45-year-old banned from the road for five years

A Douglas man has been banned from the road for five years after failing to properly comply with the drink drive procedure.

Jonathan Lennon Taylor, of Ballafletcher Road, failed a roadside breath test on 21 January and was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters.

However once there the 45-year-old only provided one of the samples required.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse the court heard police had been contacted by the manager of the Best Western Palace Hotel and Casino just before 11.30am that morning.

The staff member was concerned that Taylor had been using his car whilst intoxicated; in interview Taylor told officers he’d been drinking beer the night before and vodka on the day.

He also admitted failing to change the ownership of the car he was in after buying it on Facebook.

The following day, 22 January, Taylor was found asleep in a bus stop surrounded by empty cans – when police arrived he gave them false details and was arrested again.

Addressing the court a probation officer said Taylor had suffered periods of homelessness and had been living in a tent adding: “By his own admission he used alcohol as a coping mechanism.

“Unfortunately, in the last few years, he has suffered greatly with his mental health – particularly PTSD,” she added.

Ordering Taylor to work with the probation service for 18 months, and imposing 10 penalty points on his licence, Deputy High Bailiff Graeme Cook told him: “I appreciate you are trying to seek help.”

Taylor will remain disqualified after his ban expires unless he takes and passes an extended driving test.
