Drink driver who hit kerb and rolled car is banned from road

29-year-old was 1.5 times over limit at time of afternoon crash

A drink driving motorist has been banned from the road after rolling, and crashing, his car.

William Norman Smith, of Main Road in Greeba, hit a kerb on Poortown Road in Peel on Monday (7 August) just before 1.30pm.

He failed a roadside breath test and was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters where further tests showed he was more than one and a half times over the legal limit.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse the prosecutor told the court the 29-year-old had been ‘very lucky’.

Smith’s advocate described her client as ‘deeply remorseful’.

Fining him £1,350, and ordering him to pay £125 in prosecution costs, Magistrates told him: “This was a very stupid thing to have done. You should not have been behind a wheel.”

Disqualifying him from driving for two years, and until he’s taken and passed an extended driving test, they added: “You’re going to have plenty of time to reflect.”
