Drink-driver fined £1,700 and banned from road after crash

Onchan man was more than twice the legal limit

A drink-driver who crashed into a wall on Summerhill Road has been fined £1,700 and banned from driving for three years.

Artur Smiechura from Main Road in Onchan pleaded guilty to driving after consuming excess alcohol.

Smiechura had been driving along Douglas promenade shortly after 6am on Sunday 16 July when he turned up Summerhill, veered into the opposite carriageway and collided with the wall near the Kaye Memorial Garden.

After failing a roadside breath test, the 48-year-old provided a further sample at Police Headquarters which gave a reading of 84 - the legal limit is 35.

The court heard Smiechura had been drinking after finishing work at his takeaway business, and felt 'very ashamed' of his actions.

In addition to a £1,700 fine and a three-year ban, magistrates ordered Smiechura to take an extended driving test and complete an education course before he can reapply for his licence, as well as paying £125 in prosecution costs.
