Drink-driver banned for 1 year after 'regrettable error of judgement'

Castletown woman got behind the wheel after an afternoon in the pub

A Castletown woman has been banned from driving for a year after getting behind the wheel of her Land Rover after a trip to the pub.

Ann Roberts of Knock Rushen admitted to driving while over the limit after spending an afternoon in the Albert Pub in Port St Mary in April.

Magistrates heard the 67-year-old was seen driving past the pub after consuming alcohol and parking her car on the pavement.

She re-entered the Albert Pub to collect her jacket when bar staff asked her if she had driven after drinking.

Roberts handed her car key to staff at the pub and left, before being arrested at a nearby bus stop shortly after.

Having been unable to provide a breath sample due to a respiratory infection, Roberts gave a blood sample at Police Headquarters which gave a reading of 102 - the legal limit is 80.

Her advocate described the decision to drive as a regrettable error of judgement.

Magistrates handing her a one-year disqualification, after which Roberts will have to take an extended driving test, as well as a £750 fine and £125 costs.
