Castletown man spat at nurse while being treated in ED

20-year-old pleads guilty to common assault charge following incident

A Castletown man who spat at a nurse who was treating his injuries at Noble's Hospital will be sentenced next month.

Brendan Shaw Creer of Y Vaarney Yiarg pleaded guilty to a charge of common assault at Douglas Courthouse.

He was picked up by police after sustaining a head injury while intoxicated on 21 December, with officers taking the 20-year-old to the Emergency Department after he lost consciousness.

Prosecution described his behaviour at Noble's as 'volatile', and said he had to be restrained by hospital staff.

When one nurse attempted to fit Creer with a canula, he swore at her before spitting on her face.

His advocate read a statement Creer submitted to police, in which he said "I wish to apologise to the nurse", adding "spitting at anyone is unacceptable".

She also told the court Creer did not remember the incident or being arrested, and that he'd panicked after waking up to see people he didn't recognise.

Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood described the offence as "a disgusting assault on nursing staff".

She ordered a full probation report ahead of sentencing, adjourning matters until 20 February.

Creer remains on bail until his next court appearance.
