Arbory and Rushen Commissioners vow to try reverse Southern Pool decision

'Anger and dismay' over DESC ruling

Arbory and Rushen Parish Commissioners have vowed to do 'everything in their power' to reverse the decision to close the Southern Swimming Pool.

At their meeting last night, commissioners 'expressed dismay and anger' over the recommendation from the Department of Education, Sport and Culture to shut the facility at the end of March.

A statement says 'the decision appeared to be based on some flawed assumptions and the worst-case scenario and was likely to lead to greater expense to central government than keeping the pool open'.

Commissioners argue the social and educational cost of such a move hasn't been considered, urging all parties to find a 'pragmatic solution'.

The Southern Pool Board has requested a 6.1p rate contribution towards its 2024/25 operating costs, which the local authority has agreed to. For the 2023/24 financial year a requested 6p rate was paid.
