Appeal to knit blankets for Ukraine

Full single knitted blankets or squares needed

Can you knit a six by four-foot blanket to help those in need?

Local language group Café Lingo has launched an appeal for single knitted blankets to send to Ukraine this winter.

They need to be six by four feet approximately - which equates to 24 squares per blanked, 12 inches by 12 inches each.

The group has released the following instructions on how to make a blanket square:

  • You will need a 50 grm ball of double knitting wool and size 8 (4mm) needles
  • Cast on 60 stitches
  • Work in garter stitch or moss stitch for a warm blanket
  • Knit 90-100 rows, until the work measures 12 inches
  • Cast off
  • Finish off loose threads at the beginning and end

If you are unable to make a whole blanket, you can knit some 12 inch squares, or help the group with sewing squares together.

Finished blankets can be dropped off at Davison's on Peel Promenade, or the Promenade Methodist Church in Douglas between 11:30 and 12:30 on Sunday mornings, or at Café Lingo's meeting there between 10am and 12pm on Saturday 20 January.

The deadline for blankets is also Saturday 20 January.

Organiser Karen Norton says they don't need to be pretty, just functional:
