Allinson: Government cannot 'arbitrarily' reduce headcount

Treasury Minister appears before Economic Policy Review Committee

Government cannot 'arbitrarily' reduce its employee headcount without considering the provision of frontline services.

That's from the treasury minister who gave evidence to a Tynwald committee today (26 February).

The Economic Policy Review Committee heard from Alex Allinson MHK and Chief Financial Officer, Caldric Randall, following last week's Budget.

Last year, statistics revealed the number of people in full time employment with the Isle of Man Government had grown by around 500 in the previous seven years.

Indeed, data revealed by the Cabinet Office in November showed that 18.7 percent of the Isle of Man's working population are government employees.

When questioned about measures being deployed to shrink that workforce, Alex Allinson stated that when a job vacancy emerges, an assessment is made as to whether a new employee needs to be hired, or if that job role can be removed.

However, he argued jobs cannot be cut in key services people 'deserve and expect':
