Consultant sacking costs Manx taxpayer £500,000

A consultant earning around £185,000 a year at Noble's Hospital has won a claim for unfair dismissal - and been awarded £37,000 compensation.

Egyptian-born Dr Boughdady Iskander's contract as a consultant general surgeon - specialising in colorectal surgery - was terminated after 14 years, with just three-months notice last May.

The Department of Health and Social Care says it then sacked him on grounds of capability after an investigation branded him 'a real risk to members of the public'.

A document summarising the tribunal has been made public this week.

Since his dismissal, DHSC costs to pay Dr Boughdady and fill a gap left by his departure have cost taxpayers around half a million pounds.

Financial director Malcolm Couch says there are lessons to be learned.
