War memorials protected from demolition

DEFA adds 27 landmarks to protected buildings register

Around 30 maritime buildings and war memorials have been protected from demolition.

Monuments marking the Island's involvement in the Crimean War and the Battle of Inkerman are among 27 landmarks granted protected status.

Milner's Tower on Bradda Head and two lifeboat stations in the south of the Island have also been included.

Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Geoffrey Boot says the monuments 'play an important role in our cultural identity'.

More than 300 sites are now on the protected buildings register (PBR) which the government says is part of an ongoing assessment of the Island's built heritage.

The latest additions see 14 coastal buildings and 13 war memorials saved from demolition due to their special architectural or historical interest.

It comes after Mr Boot hinted in April that the PBR would grow before the end of the current administration.

Other buildings, such as the Cosy Nook in Port Erin, Trafalgar House in Douglas and the Mitre in Kirk Michael have all been issued with preservation notices.
