Van driver denies seriously injuring motorcyclist

Douglas man accused of causing serious bodily harm to biker

A Douglas van driver’s denied seriously injuring a motorcyclist by driving carelessly at one of the Island’s busiest junctions.

Thirty-four-year-old Stephen Christopher Smith of Princes Street appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to driving without a valid licence or insurance, and not guilty to causing serious bodily harm by driving without due care and attention.

The court heard Smith was in a Ford Transit when he ran into the back of the biker at the Cooil Roundabout on 16 August.

Prosecution advocate James Robinson told the hearing the rider had received injuries to his spine which made it difficult to use one of his arms.

Smith’s advocate asked magistrates to order the biker’s medical records be sent to him, but the bench said they didn’t have the power to do so.

Smith was bailed in the sum of £500 and will next appear in court at a pre-trial review on 12 March.

Magistrates adjourned sentencing on the other charges until after the trial has ended.
