Unemployment increases in December

Jump of 39 compared to previous month

Unemployment on the Isle of Man grew at the end of 2019.

The latest figures from the Isle of Man Government show there were 376 people out of work in December, a rise of 39 compared to the previous month.

The number is also higher than at the same time in 2018.

Business services, retail distribution and construction are among the sectors with the highest number of people looking for work.

The increase in unemployment coincides with a drop in the number of vacancies registered with the Job Centre, with just under 550 recorded last month.

Catering and entertainment, medical services and teaching were the areas with the highest number of available jobs.

It gives the Island an unemployment rate of 0.9%, up from 0.8% in November, and the highest total of people out of work since April 2018.
