Tougher punishment for shop worker verbal abuse 'would be welcomed'

Retail head says incidents can have 'marked impact' on mental health

A leading figure in Island retail says tougher punishments for verbal abuse towards shop workers would be welcomed.

New laws came into force in Scotland on 24 August aiming to protect retail staff against such incidents whilst granting stronger repremands for those who commit them.

Retail Head of the Manx Co-op, Andy Corrie, says shop worker abuse, particularly physical incidents, is less common on the Isle of Man than in the UK.

However, he says any abuse can have a significant mental impact on Manx workers:
