Teachers pay increase a DESC 'obligation', says NASUWT

Union representative says offer doesn't solve ongoing dispute

A representative from a teaching union insists the pay rise announced last week is only the education department following obligations as an employer.

The Department of Education, Sport and Culture says the increase will be the largest in 15 years.

However, a local representative of the NASUWT says this doesn't solve the ongoing dispute over pay and conditions.

Meanwhile, the education minister says he's determined to resolve the ongoing pay dispute with the teaching unions before the start of the next academic year.

The disagreement between the unions and the education department stems from a pay decision in 2018, and led to teachers taking industrial action short of a strike earlier this year.
