Strang man sentenced after false 'paedophile ring' claims

Andrew Fenton's accusations spark 18-month investigation

A Strang man banned from posting false stories about paedophiles on social media broke the court order the day it was made.

Andrew Fenton of Cronk Grianagh pleaded not guilty to breaching a restraining order and two counts of misusing the Island’s telecommunications system.

He was convicted of all three offences after a trial.

Fenton had falsely accused a number of men of being part of a secret paedophile ring, sparking an 18-month police investigation.

Officers discovered the social media posts had been completely untrue, and Fenton was convicted of harassment last November.

Magistrates handed him a 16-week prison term, suspended for two years, as well as giving him a restraining order.

But despite being told not to identify any of the men online, he did so just hours after appearing in court.

Fenton was bailed and will appear for sentencing on 31 August.
