Silverdale carousel spinning again

Local company makes new parts from scratch

A Victorian carousel is spinning once again after undergoing essential maintenance.

The structure, in Silverdale Glen, was first installed in 1911.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture says its ‘unique construction’ had made the sourcing of experienced engineers, and parts, difficult.

Laxey Towing Company Ltd has made many of the new parts from scratch – other work included stripping and rebuilding the water control mechanism and replacing the rollers.

Government says the work is part of a programme of works to encourage use of the Island’s glens.  Plans are in place to paint the boats and horses in due course.
