Prisoner threw cup of urine over assistant governor

Fourteen-week jail sentence for 37-year-old

A court’s heard a prisoner at Jurby was gleeful after throwing a cup of urine into the face of an assistant governor.

Thirty-seven-year-old Alistair John Cowin appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to a single charge of common assault at on 3 March.

Prosecution advocate Roger Kane told the hearing Cowin was being held in a segregation cell at the Isle of Man prison when he carried out the attack.

Cowin threw the contents of the cup directly into the face of the assistant governor, and was said to be gleeful after the incident.

The court heard he’d shown no remorse for his actions and had also thrown a cup of coffee over another member of staff earlier that day.

Mrs Hughes described the attack as very serious and deeply unpleasant.

She jailed Cowin for 14 weeks, with the sentence running alongside his current prison term.
