Trial in May
A Peel woman will appear at the Court of General Gaol Delivery over claims she defrauded the taxpayer out of £76,000 in benefits over six years.
Thirty-seven-year-old Michelle Marie Makin, of Corrin’s Way, appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas Courthouse.
She’d denied nine counts of making false representations to obtain benefits, as well as one charge that she failed to inform benefits staff about a change in her circumstances.
The court heard an anonymous tipoff to the benefits office sparked an investigation that’s alleged to have found her husband had been living with her after she said they lived apart.

Hazel Carroon, prosecuting, said Mrs Makin’s husband had paid around £168,000 into her bank account, but she hadn’t declared the income.
All of the offences are said to have happened between September 2012 and July 2018.
Mrs Hughes said with large amounts of money over such a long period, the case would have to be tried at the Court of General Gaol Delivery.
She granted bail until Mrs Makin is committed for trial on 7 May.
