On-Island eye treatment could save £250,000

Figure revealed in Tynwald

Treating more patients with eye conditions on-Island could save government up to a quarter of a million pounds a year.

The figure was revealed in Tynwald this week in response to a question from Speaker of the House of Keys Juan Watterson.

The Department of Health and Social Care is current looking for expressions of interest in running expanded services at Noble's Hospital.

At the moment, fifteen percent of patients suffering from age-related macular degeneration travel to Liverpool for monthly injections.

Health Minister David Ashford says, although the overall cost of the new services won't be known until the tender process is complete, he is confident it will mean savings:
