Net Biodiversity Gain: a 'win-win' for developers and nature?

Sustainable growth put under the spotlight

The Island's planning system was described as the 'biggest interface between government and nature' today in Tynwald.

Given the heightened awareness of the human effect on the natural world, could embedding an eco-friendly scheme within the planning process be a responsible measure in a Biosphere nation, such as the Isle of Man?

Net Biosdiversity Gain seeks not only to measure the environmental impact of a development but will ensure any wildlife, be it flora or fauna, is replaced and enhanced elsewhere, as a result.

The environment minister was quizzed on the concept by Bill Henderson MLC, and admitted biodiversity 'should be an integral part to planning.'
