Kerbside recycling too expensive says PSM Commissioners

Local authority won't reintroduce service after tender process

Port St Mary Commissioners will no longer provide kerbside recycling collections in the village, after deeming it too expensive.

Two bids submitted to provide the service during a recent tender process were 'reasonable' according to chair Dr Michelle Haywood, but had considerable 'price implications'.

She says 'significant collection costs would not be offset by savings due to reducing the amount of waste going to the incinerator', and 'earning potential from recycled material was minimal'.

The Board decided not to take up either offer, one of which came from a community-led initiative for locals to run the service.

Kerbside recycling was dropped by the local authority in April this year, after it was unable to find a signed contract between it and the company which had been providing the service.

An unforeseen rise in contractor costs was also blamed.

Since that point, the weight of rubbish being collected weekly in the village hasn't increased  much says Dr Haywood.

She believes ratepayers have been using bring back services provided by the Department of Infrastructure, and the nearby Southern Recycling Centre instead.

Only two local authorities in the Island offer kerbside collections, Douglas Council and Braddan Commissioners.

Dr Haywood says recent findings would suggest many villagers are using the existing recycling facilities.
