Island is safer than anywhere in the UK say police

Crime falls by six per cent in 2021-2022

Crime on the Isle of Man fell by six per cent in the last year – making the Island safer than anywhere in the UK.

Statistics released by the Isle of Man Constabulary show 2,765 offences were recorded between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022.

The data is included in the Chief Constable’s Annual Report which will go before Tynwald in October.

Sexual offences rose by 18 per cent in the 12 month period but there were reductions in nearly all other categories of crime including serious assaults which fell by 17 per cent.

Burglary fell to its lowest level in several decades and, over the course of the year, £600,000 worth of drugs were seized by officers.

People made 13,618 calls for help and 1,769 people were arrested – 219 were juveniles.

The Isle of Man Constabulary says the data shows the Island remains the safest place in the British Isles when compared to the 43 police force areas in England and Wales.

Chief Constable Gary Roberts said: “2021-22 felt much more like a normal year after the challenges of 2020 when the Island faced lengthy periods of lockdown and when crime levels soared in the summer of 2020.

“The data that is being released today shows that the Isle of Man is a supremely safe place where we are able to enjoy an enviable quality of life.”

The overall crime detection rate, for the 12-month period, increased by three per cent to 46 per cent.
