'Unprecedented union' committed to IPCC targets
A new environmental lobby has been formed, aiming to 'encourage and support' government in tackling what could be 'irreversible' consequences of climate change.
Friends of the Earth, The Manx Labour Party, The Green Party along with the One World Centre, Amnesty IoM and others, have founded what they call an 'unprecedented union' .
In the wake of what they say is a 'worrying lack of urgency from government' the Climate Change Coalition will speak as 'one united voice' on the drastic need for climate action on the Isle of Man.
What they're committed to is 'no longer controversial' - they say 'it's simply about urging our elected representatives to grapple with the single biggest threat to the welfare of all.'
Working on three fronts; emissions reduction, renewable investment and upholding the Island's biosphere pledges, the coalition will seek to agree 'achievable' interim targets.
In 2013, government adopted a 2050 deadline to reduce carbon emissions by 80%, something which measured against the 12-year warning of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change most recent report, needs reconsidering according to the coalition.
A launch event for the group will be hosted on November 22 from 7.30pm at the Manx Legion Club.
