Grass fire warning for sunny weekend

A photo issued by the fire service to illustrate the potential scale of such fires

Fire service issues advice on how to prevent them

With a warm and sunny weekend in store and already dry vegetation, there's a warning from the fire service about grass fires.

It says they can get out of hand very quickly, cause extensive damage and put lives at risk.

If you see grass smouldering, call 999 immediately to report it.

The fire service has also issued tips on how to minimise the risk of such incidents starting:

- Don’t drop cigarettes, or anything that is burning, on dry ground, and don't throw cigarettes out of car windows, as they may land on dry grass by the roadside.

- Only use barbeques in suitable and safe areas, never leave them unattended and have a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergency use.

- Make sure you dispose of them correctly - they should be fully extinguished and cold before getting rid of the contents.

- Also, keep young children and ball games away from barbecues.

- And sunlight shining through glass can start large fires, so take glass bottles and jars home or put them in a waste or recycling bin.
