Land needed to store waste in event of failure at facility
The Isle of Man Government is looking for somewhere to store waste, in the event of a failure at the incinerator at Richmond Hill.
There is some room on the site itself but the area available there is described as limited.
As a result, the Department of Infrastructure is now looking for what it describes as a suitable off site location.
Such a prevision is a requirement and it's understood one place being looked at is the site formally occupied by Ballakinnish Nurseries, just to the north of the incinerator on the New Castletown Road.
It's 18 acres in total, and was bought by the government in 2008.
Planning was approved for storing construction materials on three acres in connection with Douglas regeneration and with the prom scheme, but that approval runs out in 2022.
The current contract for the incinerator runs out in 2029, but the government intends to rely on the facility as long as it remains compliant regarding emissions.
