Gas extraction 'could speed up' transition to renewables

Island current imports gas for power station and heating

Extracting gas in Manx waters could help the Isle of Man transition to using renewable energy more quickly.

That's according to Dr David Quirk at the Manx Geological Survey.

Having previously worked in the oil and gas industry, Dr Quirk now focusses on renewable energy and sustainable resources.

Dr Quirk believes the quicker the Island is not reliant on gas and moves to carbon neutrality the better.

However, he says more funds would be available to invest in renewables, if the Island had its own gas supply, rather than having to import 3.8 billion cubic feet of gas each year:
